Let’s chat about how to transform your classroom library from levels to genres! If you’re looking to create a more engaging and student-friendly classroom library, transforming from leveled books to a genre- and theme-based system can be a game-changer. Instead of students choosing books based on reading levels, they’ll explore books by interest, which encourages a love of reading and helps them discover new favorites. A simple sticker system can make organizing and managing your new library setup easy and efficient!
Why Make the Switch to Reading Themes?
Traditionally, while leveled books help with differentiated instruction, they can sometimes limit student choice and motivation. It is a time consuming project, however, the reward is so grand for transforming your classroom library from levels to genres!
Benefits for teachers by organizing the classroom library by genre and theme:
✅ Encourages reading for enjoyment instead of just skill progression
✅ Gives students more ownership in book selection
✅ Helps students develop personal reading identities
✅ Mirrors real-world libraries and bookstores
✅ Supports cross-curricular connections

Step 1: Sort Books by Genre & Theme
The first step is to start by gathering all your books and deciding on broad genres and themes that fit your collection. Some common categories include:
- Genres: Mystery, Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Poetry, Biography, Graphic Novels
- Themes: Friendship, Kindness, Adventure, Animals, Sports, STEM, Social Issues, Myths & Legends
If you have a large collection, start with broad categories, and refine them as needed.

Step 2: Create a Sticker System for your Book Topics
Once you’ve sorted your books, assign color-coded or symbol-based stickers to each category.
📘 Mystery – Blue sticker
🌟 Fantasy – Purple sticker
📜 Historical Fiction – Brown sticker
🐾 Animals – Green sticker
💬 Graphic Novels – Yellow sticker
Next, apply the stickers to the backs of books so students can quickly find and return them to the right spot.

Step 3: Label Shelves & Bins
Use matching labels on bookshelves or bins to make it easy for students to organize books independently. Teachers can help with organization by adding a small anchor chart or reference guide. Especially important, visuals can also help remind students of each genre or theme. Strong storage book bins are a must have in the classroom!

Step 4: Teach Students How to Use the System
Furthermore, you can dedicate some time to introducing the new setup:
- Explain the new system and why it’s exciting!
- Model how to find books and return them correctly.
- Let students browse and explore the new setup.
- Encourage discussion: Ask students about their favorite genres and themes.
Step 5: Monitor & Adjust Classroom Books
Observe how students use the library and be flexible! If some genres aren’t getting attention, highlight them in a book talk or book recommendation display.
By transitioning to a genre- and theme-based classroom library with a simple sticker system, you’ll empower students to explore books based on their interests and develop a lifelong love for reading. 📚💙
